My Official Post

I got a bit excited with having a venue for writing about Web 2.0, that I failed to respond to the actual prompt for the week.

In addition to having 2 blogs (now 3), a Shutterfly site, a Facebook page, and a Twitter account, I have also used MySpace, Wikipedia, wikis (in general), LinkedIn, and YouTube. I have a Plaxo account, but I never use it. I just get the irritating e-mails that so-and-so has a birthday on a given date. I don’t even know who the people are.

I think that Web 2.0 needs to be defined in order to describe what other technologies I have used. I’m a bit familiar with open source software and meetup.com, but still haven’t figured out if they fall under the definition of Web 2.0.

I don’t really consider myself a leader or a follower. I guess I would call myself a “late-adopter.” I’ve been forced to use some of the technologies, simply for ease of use. Having a Shutterfly account makes my life SOOO much easier. I can upload pictures of my daughter to a centralized place, which makes my mother happy because she can see pictures of her only grandchild.

I signed up for a Twitter account because I kept hearing the buzzwords being used and decided to check it out for myself. Funny thing though, I posted a note on my Facebook page that I didn’t quite get the point of Twitter. Several of my friends posted that they didn’t either. Way to use Web 2.0 to discuss Web 2.0 technologies! Image may be NSFW.

:)

I don’t use MySpace anymore, but enjoy using Facebook as its replacement. It’s a fairly easy way to keep people updated on my life or post questions and get a significant amount of feedback from others.

I used SecondLife once and really found it difficult to use. Given that my background is in usability, I think the SecondLife designers should have taken into account how intuitive things should be before jumping in and designing something. It’s going to take a lot of convincing for me to use it again.

My goal in the class is to get a better sense of how these technologies can be used in the classroom. I see how they are used in day-to-day life (well, except for Twitter, which I still don’t get), but I’d like to see them applied in an educational setting. There is also a blurred line (for me) between Web 2.0 and computer-supported cooperative work. I hope to be able to better distinguish between the two.
